MEDICAL CARE MISSION
Established in 1983, by local Presbyterians, the Presbyterian Medical Care Mission is dedicated to providing primary medical care in a non-denominational Christian setting to persons in Abilene and the Texas Midwest who do not have third-party health insurance coverage and who do not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare.
The Mission employs two physicians and two medical assistants. Together, this four-member medical team serves over 50 patients daily. Over 70 community volunteers provide all of the clerical work for the Mission. It takes 40 volunteers a week to keep the Mission open. They donate over 7,900 hours of their time annually and save the Mission an estimated $96,000.
Patients who are eligible for Mission services are charged on a sliding fee scale that is determined by annual household income and number of persons living in the household. Although patients are encouraged to contribute to the financial responsibilities of their medical care, none are denied service or treatment because of the inability to pay for an office visit.
